Bihar: In big jolt to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and BJP, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Shahnawaz Alam defeated Janata Dal-United (JD-U) nominee Murshid Alam by over 41,225 votes in the Jokihat assembly seat in the recent bypolls, the results for which were announced on Thursday.

Shahnawaz, the youngest son of late RJD stalwart Md Taslimuddin, secured 81,240 votes to Murshid’s 40,015. The defeat has come as a jolt to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who dumped RJD and Congress last year to join hands with BJP to form a new coalition Government in Bihar.

The by-election to the Assembly seat was necessitated by the resignation of sitting MLA Sarfaraz Alam, the elder brother of the RJD candidate in March this year, who went on to win the by-poll for Araria Lok Sabha seat on an RJD ticket.

The Janata Dal (United) had registered three consecutive victories at Jokihat before Thursday’s debacle.
